A small tempo traveler, which was initially donated by Bank of India was used to can carry all the science lab equipments required for the day's activities to be taught the school. Then a couple of stage program "Sundara Manamadhe Bharli" by Kalabhavan America was organized to raise funds for the project. A new vehicle was procured based on the funds donated by Dr Anil Nerurkar and Dr. Meena Nerurkar of Philadelphia graciously and the"Asha for education" Princeton America donated funds for around 10 years along with other donor helped in continuing this project.

R E S O U R C E S 

We had trained fresh Science Graduates by teachers from Mumbai and other areas with respect to teaching Science and Mathematics in a student friendly environment. Students were encouraged to involve themselves in the experiments and provide their own opinion and findings.One of the methods used by Mr. Raju Vartak, one of our founder teachers, was "Hands on Activities and Experiment Method".According to Jean Piget "Knowledge cannot be poured in any body's brain; it gets constructed by experiencing and experimenting with the surroundings' based on this we have used this method where the teacher helps the student to understand the process of learning by his (students) personal involvement in the experiment.

Vasundhara reaches various schools in rural areas with a mobile science laboratory, which can carry science instructors along with various laboratories equipments and material. Nearly 1200 students from 90 villages are benefiting from this program. The mathematics and the other subjects taught by the specially trained teachers from Vasundhara using the various new methods of education like Hands on Activities, audio-visual etc has now become more of a 'Peoples Education Project' spreading education and health awareness among the rural masses.


I N T R O D U C T I O N

Almost all schools in remote backward villages do not have science laboratories and hence students are not able to carry out science experiments themselves. Thus the project "SCIENCE ON WHEELS" was born in 1998 and for the last 12 years our vehicle has been visiting nearly 50-60 High School (8th & 9th standards) & 90 Primary Schools (5th to 7th standards) twice every year in more than 100 villages, equipped with trained Science Instructors and necessary laboratory equipments & material.


I N C E P T I O N

A survey of most of the schools in Sindudhurg district was conducted by our team and on the basis of this survey, it was observed that many schools in the rural and backward areas did not have any laboratory facilities or any teaching equipments with them. Though many of the schools were not even accessible it was decided to start a program, for reaching out to these students through this project.

The teachers here use their own ideas and techniques in their teachings, so that the process of learning takes place.They help the students in understanding a concept, in a much better way and identifying with the principles and theories of sciences.They break free of the monotonous activity of the regular classroom teaching style.


S T U D E N T S  P E R S P E C T I V E

This method takes the student's, through a situational analysis of the theory presented to them.Organizing the situation and understanding the principles behind the theory in a more clear manner.Thinking on their own about the problem.Understanding that, knowledge is not just in books and words of the text, but it's a reality.Understanding becomes much more easier and helps in generating more interest.


M A I N  B E N E F I T S 

  • Students get first hand science knowledge through simple experiments and hands-on activities.
  • Students are introduced to the method of science & catalyzed to enhance their science skills like measurement, observation, analysis, developing hypothesis and testing it, classification etc.
  • Students also learn mathematics through experience and experiments. Most of the students, who were poor in mathematics, gained confidence and talented students gained new ideas & understood the mathematical thought along with mathematical skills.
  • Students enjoyed and understood many concept from Science, Mathematics and Geography, which they otherwise used to cram without understanding.Students are also introduced to issue based Science, Technology and recent advancement in areas like Water, Land, Ecology, Earth Science and Earthquakes, Oceanography, Space Science and Technology etc.
  • Students of rural areas were initially very shy and used to be passive listeners. Now they have become bold and ask for clarification if they don't understand. They even raise intelligent doubts and questions.
  • Teachers were introduced to new methodologies to teach Science and Mathematics.
